Will Thou Be Made Whole?

Introduction: In a world where knowledge has increased and is easily accessible, you would think that there'd be a good representation of physical health, mental stability and spiritual understanding, however, with a true assessment, we see more people sick, lost, and confused than ever before. And so, on top of all the questions and challenges one would face, we ask the question that Christ asked a man who suffered for many years from the same problem, 'Will thou be made whole?'

Let's Begin >

2 of 7

John 5:5 = And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

John 5:6 = When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Will thou be made WHOLE?

John 5:7-8 = The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

Note: Christ asked a man a question that may seem to have an obvious answer, considering the man's condition, however, we find that Christ was doing more than just healing the man. He was empowering him on how to walk out his life by providing him with three actions to be MADE WHOLE:

In this basic study we will touch on these 3 actions by simply stating what the scriptures have to say with little-to-no commentary. We will simply let the Word of God (The Bible) speak for itself.

Job 5:17-18 = Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

Note: The word for “make whole” in Hebrew ( רפה • RAPAH • H7495 ) means to heal, make healthful. This word is used to refer to healing 57 times in scripture as well as 5 times as Physician. Here’s a few examples:

Genesis 20:17 = So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.

Exodus 15:26 = And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

Numbers 12:13 = And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.

Note: Healing comes from the Most High God. When we go outside of Him for healing, we find ourselves not fully recovered and other ailments can come upon us.

2 Chronicles 16:12-13 = And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.

Jeremiah 8:22 = Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

#1 RISE: to Stand, Abide, Establish, Perform

Note: In order to RISE (Hebrew: קומ • QAM • H6965) we have to acknowledge that we have fallen. Have we fallen away from the path of Christ into our own desires, beliefs and way of life?

Proverbs 24:16 = For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Acts 26:16 = But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

1 Corinthians 2:5 = That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Galatians 5:1 = Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Ephesians 6:11, 14 = Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Malachi 4:2 = unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings;

1 Thessalonians 3:8 = For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

#2 Take Up Thy Bed: no longer slumber or sleep SPIRITUALLY

Note: The lame man had grown so accustom to his environment and circumstances that he began to rest in them. Laying by the pool became his lifestyle and the act of healing was just a conversation full of excuses more so than a desire to be MADE WHOLE. We have to be careful of this temptation to make excuses for our actions and circumstances instead of rising above them.

Luke 22:40, 46 = And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

Genesis 28:16 = And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

Proverbs 6:4-11 = Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Jonah 1:6 = So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Luke 21:34-36 =  And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Note: After the first action to Rise takes place, we now have to come out of what we have been resting in which is causing us to be stagnate and complacent in our efforts and draw closer to the Almighty God and come to rest in the Prince of Peace. This was the problem of the lame man at the pool. We want to make sure we rest in the Lord and not our own desires and circumstances.

Psalm 37:7 = Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Jeremiah 6:16 = Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 = Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

#3 Walk: to Behave, Come, Depart, Exercise, Grow

Note: Now solely speaking in the physical sense, to the lame man, the action to RISE may have been a challenge, but not impossible... I mean, he could have found a way to rise in some capacity if only for a moment. And to TAKE UP HIS BED would be just a simple act of rolling it up and putting to the side. The action to WALK (Hebrew: הלכ • HALAK • H1980), now that was a different story. In his mind, this would have been impossible.

Mark 9:23 = Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Genesis 17:1 = I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Matthew 9:5-6 = For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Romans 8:1,4 = There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 13:13 = Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

1 Corinthians 7:17 = But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.

2 Corinthians 5:7 = (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

2 Corinthians 6:16 = And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

2 Corinthians 10:3 = For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

Galatians 5:16 = This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 6:16 = And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Ephesians 2:10 = For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

John 5:14 = Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

Note: Most of the sicknesses, diseases and ailments we deal with are due to our sinful nature and fleshly desires. We have to RISE from our fallen state, TAKE UP THY BED that we have made that's full of excuses due to circumstances and choices, and WALK according to the way in which our Father in Heaven has called us. Christ commanded the lame man to do so and commands it of us as well- unless a worst thing come upon us.

Hosea 4:6 = My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:

Exodus 18:20 = And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

1 John 3:4 = Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Proverbs 3:1-2 = My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Galatians 3:24 = Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Luke 17:19 = And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

James 2:14, 26 = What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Ecclesiasticus 38:9 (KJV 1611) = My son, in thy sickness be not negligent: but pray unto the Lord, and he will make thee whole.

2 Timothy 2:7 = Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
